Depending on how you make your jewellery will determine exactly what tools you will need on hand. For people who bead their jewellery, they will need wire cutters and pliers. Artists who like to meld clay will need different jewellery tools because they have to work with the clay and then toned to hook the clay to the jewellery attachments. But there are a few tools that will work well to have around the house so you can have a good selection on hand, no matter what type of jewellery you design to wear.

Jewellery tools do not have to cost a lot of money. It’s surprising that many of the tools are actually items out of the basic DIY tool box. Wire cutters, tin snips, pliers, screw drivers and hammers are often used to make jewellery pieces. However, they can be purchased in a smaller size so that they can handle smaller and more detailed work on individual pieces.

A perfect set of jewellery tools will include wire cutters. If you are making beads on to a necklace, or bending wires to make earrings or bracelets, then the wires to make them will need to be cut. Scissors won’t usually work to cut thick wires and will just dull them even when you cut small wires.

Pliers with a flat edge and a rounded edge should also be included in the set. The flat edges ones can grip and hold wire, string, small beads or pieces that are waiting to be glued in to place. They aren’t sharp like wire cutters, so there isn’t a chance they will ruin the design. Rounded pliers will curl wire if it is needed in the design. The rounded edged ones work as jewellery tools because they won’t add a crimp when it is not wanted like a flat edged pair has a tendency to do.

Another item that makes for a good jewellery tool is a set of small screwdrivers. The screws can hold in tiny pieces are made very small so that they can work with other pieces and not split them. Therefore, the screws that need to work with them also need to be very small. The tip can be flat or Phillips and can come in a range of sizes. The handles are usually small with these screwdrivers because they might need to get in to small spaces. They are also useful for wrapping wire around to get a hoop or wire curl.

Other jewellery tools to add to your collection could be engravers. Do you want to add an inscription to the piece you are making? An engraving tool can make words and phrases inside of your pieces so they are truly unique and one of a kind. The messages could be unique to a person or they could be phrases you make up for a person.

Some days, there is nothing better than kneading clay and making a little sculpture to ease away some stress and tension from the day. FIMO clay is a perfect tool to use. Not only is it therapeutic, but it also is a way to release your inner creativity and produce some nice craft pieces to keep or give as gifts. If you have never worked with FIMO clay before, it is very easy to do. There are a few tips to follow in order to be successful with it right away.

The first thing you need to do when working with FIMO clay is to work it in your hands. The clay works better when it has been kneaded and worked up to room temperature or warmer with your hands. The more pliable the clay is, the easier it is to move in to shapes or add to an existing piece so that it sticks. Take the chunk of FIMO clay you will be working with and take about five or ten minutes to work it in your hands, doing nothing but kneading it back and forth until it is warm and soft.

Another tip to follow when working with FIMO clay is to have a clean surface. When you are working with the clay on a table or desk top, it can pick up any hair, dirt or crumbs left behind. Unless you want those elements in your sculpture piece, you will want to clean the area first. The surface should also be one that won’t absorb colour from the clay. Porous surfaces like marble countertops could absorb specks of colour and stain them. Use surfaces that won’t be damaged if you are rolling the FIMO clay on top of it.

Have the tools in hand in you want to make detailed designs. In other words, don’t start a project and realise you are missing the tools, and then stop with the  sitting out so you can find what tool you need. The clay can dry out quickly, especially if you are using small pieces. Keep the tools all together with the clay so that when you work, they are all only an arm’s length away and you can access them quickly when needed to avoid drying out.

Another tip for working with FIMO clay is to keep it covered up. The clay will air dry naturally, so if it isn’t sealed in an air tight container, then the next time you go to work with it, it might be a solid mass that is unworkable! If you want to keep pieces out to grab in a hurry, keep them covered with a damp towel until you are ready to mould them.

When you are done sculpting, set the clay pieces on parchment paper on a tray out of the sunlight. The tray needs to be where air will circulate and is not damp. Damp air will prevent the clay from drying on its own or could make the FIMO clay mouldy.
